By September 27, 2022 No Comments

The Royal Engineers Badminton Club had a very successful Overseas Visit (OSV) between 20 Aug 22 to 2 Sep 22. Ten players from the Royal Engineer Badminton Corps took part in the OSV 22. The aim of this visit was to promote badminton within the Corps, inspire Corps players and ultimately develop Corps players by allowing them to gain experience playing against international players. Team training sessions were conducted prior to start of the friendly games. The team played friendly yet competitive matches against Special Branch Police, Port Dickson; Kulang Badminton Academy, Michael Badminton Academy, Puchong, and Perk Chinese Badminton Association, Lumut. The team also had an opportunity to meet and learn from the former Malaysian International Badminton player, Mr Kwek Chinew Peng.

Beside sporting, the tour also incorporated various educational and cultural visits, to allow the team to immerse in the rich culture and traditions of Malaysia. They explored the local area and experienced a sunset cruise in Port Dickson. The team then visited the Chinese Buddhist temple. On the way to Kulang, the team stop by the Army Museum and learned about the British Army’s formation in Malaysia a few hundred years ago. In Kulang, the team visited the Gurkha Cemetery and paid tribute to their ancestors. It was particularly significant to the QGE players as the QGE’s first Sqn was formed in Kulang in 1948. The team then witnessed the majestic Batu Cave and vibrant Genting Highland. Most of all, the team had an excellent opportunity to tour around the Badminton World Federation HQ – thank you to Mr Michael Lee Tiam Yow (local tour guide) who made this possible. Finally, the team concluded the visit with a team dinner with Defence Advisor Kuala Lumpur Capt A J Stockbridge (Royal Navy) and Assistant Defence Advisor WO2 James Wilshaw (Army) from British High Commission who whole heartly supported the team to bring us to the country.

The RE OSV was a great success. The Corps Badminton Club was not only able to achieve its objectives but also promoted the highest standards of the British Army in Malaysia. #Royal Engineer #Royal Engineer Badminton Club##Army Badminton Association #ASCB #Brigade of Gurkhas #Malaysia #highcommissionkwalalumpur.
